The Spalding Varsity TF-150 is a full-size (size 7) basketball with a rubber cover, made to handle asphalt courts, driveways and school yards as well as indoor halls. This version carries the Liga Endesa ACB branding of the Spanish league. If you want a durable ball for shooting around, pickup games or learning the basics, a rubber ball like this is the sensible starting point.

Rubber or composite?

Basketballs come in three main cover types. Rubber balls like the Varsity are tough and cope well with rough outdoor surfaces. Composite leather balls feel softer and grip better on wooden floors, but wear quickly outside. Genuine leather balls are for indoor competition only. If most of your playing happens outdoors, rubber is the practical choice. It feels a little firmer in the hand, which you stop noticing after a few sessions.

A 15-minute session for beginners

Warm up first. Our mobility routine for beginners works well before ball sports, especially for ankles and hips. Then try this:

  1. Stationary dribbling (4 min): 1 minute per hand at waist height, then 2 minutes of crossovers.
  2. Form shooting (5 min): stand close to the basket and take 5 shots from each of 5 spots. Focus on bending your knees and following through.
  3. Layups (3 min): alternate right-hand layups from the right side and left-hand layups from the left.
  4. Free throws (3 min): shoot 10, rest briefly between attempts and note how many you make.

Repeat the session two or three times a week and track your free-throw count. It is an easy way to see progress.

Inflation and care

Check the pressure before you play. A ball that is too soft is hard to dribble, and one that is too hard is harder to control and puts more strain on the valve and seams. Moisten the pump needle before inserting it so it slides in without damaging the valve.

Wipe the ball with a damp cloth after outdoor sessions, let it dry and store it indoors at room temperature. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or in direct sun for long periods, and do not sit on it or kick it, which can deform the ball over time.

What to pair it with

A hand pump with a ball needle, a water bottle and indoor or court shoes with good grip are the basics. On outdoor courts, a ball bag keeps dirt off your other kit.

FAQ

Which basketball size do I need?

Size 7 is the standard for men's games and older boys. Women's competitions use size 6, and younger children usually play with size 5.

Can I use a rubber basketball indoors?

Yes. The Varsity TF-150 is made for all surfaces. Indoors, a composite leather ball feels softer and grips better, but a rubber ball works fine for practice.

How hard should I pump up the ball?

Use the pressure printed next to the valve. A simple check: dropped from about 1.8 m onto a hard floor, a well-inflated ball bounces back to roughly 1.2 to 1.4 m.
