At a glance

  • 1 kg single dumbbell with a cast-iron core
  • Coated surface that is kinder to floors than bare metal
  • Suits lateral raises, front raises and rotator-cuff warm-ups
  • Compact enough to keep next to the sofa or in a drawer

This is a single 1 kg Umbro dumbbell with a cast-iron core and a coated surface. It is a light, fixed-weight dumbbell for exercises where a little load goes a long way: lateral and front raises, shoulder warm-ups, Pilates-style arm series and simple toning work at home. Note that it comes as one dumbbell, so you need two for exercises with a weight in each hand.

Who it suits

A 1 kg dumbbell is useful if you are starting strength training from scratch, coming back after a long break, or want a light weight specifically for shoulder work. The shoulder muscles are small, and raising even 1 kg out to the side with a straight arm is harder than most people expect. It is less useful for big movements like squats or rows, where you will outgrow it within weeks. For those, adjustable dumbbells or a heavier set make more sense, as our guide to home gym equipment for beginners explains.

A short upper-body routine

With two 1 kg dumbbells, do two or three rounds:

  • Lateral raise to shoulder height: 12–15 reps
  • Front raise, alternating arms: 10 per arm
  • Bent-over reverse fly: 12 reps
  • Biceps curl: 15 reps
  • Overhead triceps extension, holding one dumbbell with both hands: 12 reps

Lift slowly, pause briefly at the top and lower under control. If 15 reps feel easy everywhere, keep the dumbbells for warm-ups and add heavier ones for the main work. The light raises also make a good warm-up before the full body workout for beginners.

What to look out for

Light dumbbells are easy to swing, which takes the work away from the muscle. Keep your elbows slightly bent, avoid shrugging, and stop the raise at shoulder height. Store the dumbbell on the floor or a low shelf where it cannot roll off, and keep it away from small children. If you have shoulder pain, get it checked before loading the joint.

Care

Wipe the coating with a damp cloth after sweaty sessions and let it dry. Avoid harsh cleaning products and keep the dumbbell out of direct sunlight for long periods, which can make coatings brittle over time. If the coating cracks or peels, the dumbbell still works, but replace it if sharp edges appear.

FAQ

Is 1 kg too light to be useful?

For squats, rows or presses it is light. For small shoulder muscles, arm circles, Pilates-style arm series and warm-ups, 1 kg is a sensible load, and many beginners find lateral raises hard enough with it.

Is this one dumbbell or a pair?

It is one dumbbell of 1 kg. For exercises where you hold a weight in each hand, you need two.

Will a coated dumbbell damage my floor?

The coating softens contact, but any weight dropped from height can mark a floor. Put it down rather than letting it fall, and train on a mat if you have wooden floors or tiles.
