The Mammut Gym Basic is a simple chalk bag for indoor climbing and bouldering. It has an outer shell of recycled polyester, a dense fleece lining, a shape-stable opening and a drawstring closure that keeps chalk from spilling in your bag. A brush holder and a light, adjustable waist belt are built in, and the whole bag weighs around 47 g. This version comes in vibrant orange, which is easy to find in a crowded gym.

Who it suits

The Gym Basic is aimed at people who climb indoors: beginners who have just bought their first shoes, regular boulderers and rope climbers who want something light on the harness side. It sticks to the essentials, which keeps it light. If you mostly boulder and share chalk with friends, a larger bucket-style bag that stands on the floor is the alternative.

Using it on the wall

Fill the bag about a third full with loose chalk, or drop in a chalk ball. Before a route, dip your fingertips and rub the chalk in thinly; a thick layer does not add grip. Close the drawstring between climbs so the chalk stays dry and does not spill.

A simple beginner session: warm up on 4 to 5 easy problems, then try 3 to 4 problems at your limit with full rest in between, and finish with a few easy climbs. New climbers often feel their forearms and fingers for a day or two afterwards, and our guide on how long muscle soreness lasts explains what is normal.

What to look for in a chalk bag

The main points are the opening size (your whole hand should fit in easily), a lining that releases chalk evenly, a closure that actually seals, and a belt or loop for wearing it on routes. A brush holder is useful because clean holds are easier to grip.

Care and lifespan

Empty the bag now and then and shake out old chalk and dust outdoors. If the fleece gets clogged, brush it out once the bag is empty. Keep it closed in your climbing bag so loose chalk does not end up on your clothes.

FAQ

Does the chalk bag come with chalk?

No chalk is listed as included, so plan to get loose chalk or a chalk ball separately. The same goes for a brush, which fits in the brush holder.

Can I use it without the belt?

Yes. Many boulderers leave the bag on the floor at the base of the problem, while rope climbers usually wear it on the waist belt so they can chalk up on the wall.

Loose chalk or a chalk ball?

Loose chalk gives better coverage, while a chalk ball makes less dust. Many climbing gyms ask for a chalk ball or liquid chalk, so check the rules of your gym.
