At a glance

  • Semi-elastic cotton/nylon blend that follows the shape of your hand
  • Thumb loop to start the wrap and hook-and-loop closure to finish it
  • Comes as a pair, one wrap for each hand
  • For boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai and heavy bag sessions

The Leone 1947 AB705 hand wraps are a pair of semi-elastic boxing wraps, each 3.5 m long, made from a cotton/nylon blend. You hook the loop over your thumb, wind the wrap around your wrist and knuckles and close it with the hook-and-loop strip. They are meant for anyone who trains with gloves on, whether that is boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai or a fitness class on the heavy bag.

This version is Leone's Italy design: black wraps with green, white and red stripes running along their length, a white LEONE 1947 logo and a small Italian-flag tab near the hook-and-loop end.

How to wrap your hands

There are many wrapping styles, but a simple one works well for beginners. Keep your fingers spread and your wrist straight the whole time.

  1. Put the loop over your thumb and bring the wrap across the back of your hand.
  2. Wrap the wrist three times, firm but not tight.
  3. Go diagonally across the back of the hand and wrap the knuckles three times.
  4. Optional: weave the wrap between your fingers for extra hold.
  5. Finish with the remaining length around the wrist and close the strip.

Make a fist afterwards. If your fingers tingle or change colour, the wrap is too tight. Unwrap and start again.

A first bag session to try: 4 rounds of 2 minutes with 1 minute of rest, keeping the punches relaxed and focusing on technique. Bag rounds raise your heart rate quickly, and our guide to heart rate zones helps you judge how hard you are working.

Choosing the right wraps

Length is the main decision. Leone 1947 makes the AB705 in 2.5 m for children, 3.5 m for most amateurs and 4.5 m for people who want more turns and padding. Semi-elastic wraps like these follow the hand's shape and are easier to get snug, which helps beginners. Classic non-elastic wraps give a firmer feel but take more practice to apply well. Quick-wrap gloves are faster but give less control over fit.

Care and lifespan

After training, unroll the wraps and let them dry completely before you roll them back up; damp wraps start to smell quickly. Wash them regularly in a laundry bag with the strip closed. Replace them when the fabric frays or the stretch is gone.

Wraps do not replace gloves. Always wear properly fitted boxing gloves over them when you hit a bag, pads or a partner.

FAQ

Is 3.5 m long enough?

For most adults, yes. Leone 1947 positions 3.5 m wraps for most amateurs, as they cover the wrist and knuckles properly. The 4.5 m version suits people who want more layers or have large hands, and 2.5 m is meant for children.

Do I need hand wraps under boxing gloves?

Most coaches ask you to wrap for bag and pad work. Wraps add support around the wrist and knuckles and soak up sweat, which also keeps the inside of your gloves fresher.

How should I wash hand wraps?

Close the hook-and-loop strip, put the wraps in a laundry bag and wash them on a gentle cycle, following the care label. Let them air-dry fully before rolling them up.
