Slazenger retractable table tennis net, blue

The Slazenger retractable table tennis net is a blue, pull-out net that clamps onto an ordinary table and turns it into a ping pong table. It extends to roughly 165 cm and grips table tops up to about 5 cm thick. When the game is over, the net rolls back into its plastic housing, so it fits in a drawer, a beach bag or a suitcase.

Who it suits

This net is for casual players: families who want a game after dinner, colleagues with a free meeting-room table, or anyone on holiday with a garden table and a few balls. It is not a replacement for a full table tennis table with a fixed net and posts, and it will not give you competition conditions. What it does well is lower the barrier to playing at all. Short games of ping pong are a sociable way to move more, and if you are using games like this to get active again, our guide on getting back into working out after a break has tips for building up gently.

Setting it up and a simple game routine

Clear the table, pull the net out across the middle and fix one clamp on each side so the net sits square to the long edges. Tighten the clamps until the net does not slide, but do not overtighten them on soft wood or coated surfaces. Check that the net is evenly stretched before you start.

A simple session for two players: warm up with five minutes of gentle forehand rallies, then five minutes of backhand rallies, and finish with a few games to 11 points. Rotate opponents if more people want to play.

What to look for in a portable net

The two numbers that matter are maximum length and the clamp opening. A standard table tennis table is 152.5 cm wide, so a net that reaches about 165 cm covers it with some room to spare. The clamp opening decides which tables work: measure your table edge before you rely on it. A retractable design is the most compact option, while nets with separate posts tend to be more rigid.

Care and storage

Wipe the net and clamps with a dry or slightly damp cloth after outdoor use, and let them dry before retracting. Do not leave the net in direct sun or rain for long periods, as plastic parts age faster outdoors. Retract it slowly rather than letting it snap back, which keeps the mechanism working longer.
